Guaranteed Rental Scheme BRIT nominees and Mercury Prize Winners Alt-J established themselves in their halls at Leeds Uni in 2007. Six years later, they were nominated for the coveted British Group category at the BRITS and credit their unusual sound to the fact they used to practice in their halls and had to keep the noise down. One of their most memorable performances was in the front room of band members Joe and Gwil’s student accommodation in Hyde Park. They remember it was packed and they were nervous playing in front of their friends but it went well. Since then, they have enjoyed success playing gigs all round the world and being regulars on the festival circuit. Guaranteed Rental Scheme So who else started in the humble beginning of student halls and have ended up in the big-time? With the addition of Ealing Art College student Farrokh Bulsara, (Freddie Mercury) , Smile was established (later Queen) Snow Patrol - University of Dundee students Gary Lightbody, Michael Morrison and Mark McClelland started Shrug, later Polarbear and eventually Snow Patrol whilst they were studying in 1994.
